A stadium conceived as a living façade, where the movement of the sea becomes architecture.
AEK Stadium - OPAP Arena is conceived as more than a football venue: it is a civic landmark shaped by identity, movement and collective energy.
Located in Nea Filadelfeia, Athens, the stadium creates a new home for AEK and a new point of reference within the city. The project responds to the scale and technical requirements of a contemporary sports venue while exploring how architecture can express the intensity of thousands of people gathering around a shared event.
The architectural identity is defined by the relationship between the solid volume of the stadium and a dynamic external skin. Rather than treating the façade as a static enclosure, the design introduces rhythm, depth and movement, transforming the perception of the building as visitors approach and move around it.
During the day, light and shadow reveal the changing geometry of the envelope. At night, integrated lighting transforms the façade into an animated urban presence, allowing the architecture to reflect the energy and atmosphere of the events taking place within.
The stadium is not simply a container for the spectacle. It becomes part of the spectacle itself.

How can the movement of the sea become architecture?
The design concept for AEK Stadium — OPAP Arena begins with the Mediterranean and with one of its most recognisable conditions: the continuous movement of water. Rather than reproducing the image of a wave literally, the project studies its behaviour — repetition, rhythm, variation and the constant transition between compression and expansion.
This movement is translated into the geometry of the stadium envelope. A sequence of vertical elements shifts progressively around the building, creating an undulating external layer that changes according to the position of the observer. From a distance, the individual components merge into a continuous surface; at closer range, the depth and repetition of the system become visible.
The façade therefore never has a single fixed appearance. As people move around the stadium, its geometry appears to expand, contract and flow. Sunlight reinforces this effect throughout the day, producing changing patterns of light and shadow across the envelope.
At night, the same principle is extended through integrated lighting. Colour and illumination can travel across the façade, transforming the building into a dynamic surface capable of responding to events, celebrations and the collective energy of the stadium.
The wave is therefore not applied as an image. Its movement becomes the organising principle of the façade.

The external façade creates depth around the stadium volume, forming a secondary layer between the building and the surrounding environment. Its repeated vertical elements provide solar protection while allowing daylight, views and air movement through the envelope, reducing the sense of a completely sealed building.
The system responds differently throughout the day as orientation and solar exposure change. The depth and spacing of the façade elements generate areas of shade around circulation and transitional spaces while the open character of the envelope supports the naturally ventilated conditions typical of many stadium concourses.
The repetitive nature of the façade also establishes a rational modular system. A limited family of elements can generate visual variation through changes in position and orientation rather than through a large number of completely different components.
Beyond environmental performance, sustainability is understood at an urban and social scale. A stadium is infrastructure designed to serve generations. Its value lies not only in event-day performance, but in its ability to become part of the identity, memory and everyday life of the community around it.
The same façade that gives the stadium its identity also becomes part of its environmental response.

The architectural identity of AEK Stadium - OPAP Arena is developed through a secondary façade system conceived as a modular envelope around the main stadium volume.
The external skin is formed by a repeated sequence of vertical elements positioned around the perimeter of the building. Variations in their orientation, spacing and relationship to the primary structure generate the wave-like movement of the façade while maintaining a rational and repeatable construction logic.
Rather than creating the geometry through individually unique components, the system uses repetition and controlled variation to produce complexity. This approach allows the visual continuity of the wave to emerge from a relatively simple family of architectural elements.
A supporting secondary structure connects the façade elements to the primary stadium construction while maintaining the depth required for circulation, maintenance and environmental separation between the external skin and the enclosed building volume.
The façade is conceived to perform differently according to distance and movement. At close range, its individual components, structure and depth remain legible; from further away, these elements visually combine to form the continuous flowing geometry that defines the stadium.
Integrated architectural lighting extends this system into the night. The façade becomes a large-scale dynamic surface where light and colour can follow the geometry of the envelope, allowing different sequences to accompany matches, events and celebrations.
A simple modular component, repeated and transformed, becomes the architectural identity of the stadium.
