A lightweight architectural structure derived from the logic of a leaf, where form, structure and landscape become one system.
The Leaf is a small architectural intervention in Norcia, Italy, conceived from a simple observation: nature achieves strength with remarkably little material.
The project begins with the structure of a leaf. A central vein provides stability while a network of smaller veins distributes forces across a thin, lightweight surface. Rather than reproducing its appearance, the architecture translates this underlying logic into a structural system.
From this principle, a lightweight canopy emerges. Structure and enclosure are conceived as one continuous element, creating shelter while allowing light, air and views to remain connected to the surrounding landscape.
The building is deliberately restrained. Instead of competing with its setting, it touches the ground lightly and uses structure, material and geometry to establish a direct relationship with the landscape.
The Leaf asks how architecture can learn from nature not by copying its forms, but by understanding how they work.
Concept
Design concept
The project began by looking beyond the visible shape of a leaf to understand the system behind it.
A leaf achieves a large surface with very little material. Its central vein acts as a primary structure, while smaller veins branch outward, distributing forces and supporting an increasingly thin surface.
The Leaf translates this hierarchy into architecture. A primary structural spine defines the building, while secondary elements extend from it to support the lightweight envelope. Structure, geometry and enclosure develop from the same organising principle.
The resulting form is not intended as a literal representation of a leaf. Its resemblance emerges from applying the same logic: one strong line supporting a wider, lighter surface.
This allows the architecture to remain simple and legible while creating a generous sheltered space beneath it.
Nature becomes not an image to reproduce, but a system to understand.

The environmental strategy begins with the same principle that defines the architecture: achieving more with less.

Inspired by the efficiency of natural structures, the building uses a clear structural hierarchy to create a large sheltered area with a reduced material presence. The extended canopy provides passive shading, protecting occupied spaces from direct solar exposure while creating a comfortable transition between inside and landscape.
The lightweight envelope, deep overhangs and integration of vegetation are conceived to reduce heat gain and improve the local microclimate. Landscape is treated as part of the environmental system rather than as an addition to the building.
Material efficiency, passive design and a close relationship with the site form the basis of the sustainability strategy.

Project information
Technical information
The architecture is organised around a primary structural spine inspired by the midrib of a leaf. Secondary structural members branch from this central element, distributing loads toward the perimeter and supporting the lightweight roof envelope.
This hierarchical system allows the roof to span across the programme while maintaining a thin visual profile and limiting the number of supporting elements below.
The envelope combines opaque and glazed areas according to orientation, daylight and solar exposure. Deep cantilevers extend beyond the enclosed spaces to provide shading and create protected external areas.
Rather than separating structure, envelope and environmental performance, the project develops them as one integrated architectural system.
