A temporary light installation transforming a Victorian gasholder into a beacon for South London.
The Lightholder reimagines Gasholder No. 13 on Old Kent Road as a temporary urban landmark — using light to reveal an existing piece of London rather than adding another object to the city.
Built between 1879 and 1881 under engineer George Livesey, the Grade II-listed structure is one of the surviving traces of South London’s industrial landscape. Once built to contain energy, its vast iron frame remains as an extraordinary piece of Victorian infrastructure.
The proposal asks how this dormant structure might acquire a new civic role before the wider regeneration of the site takes place.
During London's darker months, light transforms the gasholder into a luminous presence visible across the surrounding neighbourhood: an intervention that celebrates its industrial memory while signalling the transformation of Old Kent Road.

Concept
Design concept
The concept begins with a simple inversion.
For more than a century, the gasholder existed to contain energy. The Lightholder proposes that it should now express it.
Rather than treating the historic structure as an object to be preserved and observed, the project uses its existing geometry as the architecture of the installation. Light traces the rhythm of the Victorian iron frame, revealing proportions and structural relationships that disappear into the surrounding city after dark.
No new architectural object competes with the gasholder. The intervention is intentionally minimal: structure, darkness and light.
From October to March, when London's evenings begin early, the installation would gradually emerge as daylight fades. Seen from surrounding streets and neighbourhoods, the illuminated frame becomes a distant point of orientation — simultaneously infrastructure, monument and urban beacon.
The proposal is temporary and reversible. Its purpose is not to change the historic structure permanently, but to change how it is perceived.
By illuminating what already exists, The Lightholder gives a forgotten piece of infrastructure a new identity.

Gasholder No. 13 forms part of the industrial history of Old Kent Road and the infrastructure that once supplied energy across South London.
At approximately 160 feet high, its slender iron frame remains visible within a neighbourhood undergoing significant transformation.
The surrounding gasworks site is being reconsidered as part of the regeneration of Old Kent Road, creating an unusual moment in the life of the structure: its original function has disappeared, while its future civic role is still emerging.
The Lightholder occupies this moment between past and future.

Beyond sustainability

The Lightholder begins with reuse.
Instead of creating a new landmark, the proposal gives new meaning to an existing piece of infrastructure. The historic structure becomes both the architecture and the support for the intervention.
The installation is conceived as lightweight, temporary and reversible, minimising permanent construction and allowing components to be installed, removed and potentially reused.
Low-energy LED lighting and carefully controlled operating periods would reduce energy demand while limiting unnecessary illumination.
More broadly, the project explores cultural sustainability: preserving not only a structure, but its presence within the collective memory of the city.

Technical information
The installation is conceived as a temporary and reversible lighting system attached to the existing Gasholder No. 13 structure.
Lighting elements follow the vertical and circular geometry of the historic iron frame, creating a coherent architectural composition while minimising additional physical intervention.
The system is designed around lightweight LED technology with programmable control of intensity, sequence and operating hours.
Fixings and electrical infrastructure would be developed to respect the Grade II-listed structure and allow installation and removal without permanent alteration to the historic fabric.
The concept is intended primarily for operation during the darker months between October and March, when the installation can achieve maximum visual impact within limited operating hours.
